List of Acceptable Extra Credit
If you do not turn in quality work, you will not receive credit for your work. Please see Mr. Tonk before engaging in any assignment over 20 points. You are limited to 100 points per semester.

For 10 Points
|
|
___ Donate to the classroom one of the following: Pack of multi-colored dry-erase markers, two boxes of tissue, a package of black pens, a package of notebook paper or two notebooks. |

___ Write two full paragraphs explaining your history as a student of reading and writing and how that relates to your current performance in English class. |
|
___ Create a quality picture that relates to something we have studied in class. |
|
___ Write a thoughtful post to the classroom discussion board and print it out; it should be a class-related question or comment. |
|
___ Write two full paragraphs explaining your quality of academic work, telling me why you do or do not commit to success. |
|
For 20 Points
|
|
___ Read a newspaper article (section 1) and clip it out. Write a summary of the article and your personal reaction to it. |
|
___ Write, in your own words, three full paragraphs detailing your understanding of any major class concept. |
|
___ Create a picture that relates to something we have studied in class and a full paragraph explaining it. |
|
___ Write an email to an authoritative source related to something we’ve studied. Print out your email. You get 30 points, instead of 20, if you get a response and bring it in. |

For 30 Points
|
|
___ Write a two-page, thoughtful opinion essay on a major current event. |
|
___ Pick five sentences from the book we are studying and deconstruct them, then reconstruct them into new ones. |
|
___ Read a text-heavy web page relating to class, print it, summarize it, and explain how it enhances your understanding of class material. |

For 40 Points
|
|
___ Pick two pieces of literature from the same style or author and compare and contrast their literary differences in at least three pages. |
|
___ Pick an author and write a two page researched report. You must have at least five research sources, cited in proper MLA format. |
|
___ Write a short story or play that is written in the style of the current literature unit and a paragraph explaining how it relates to that unit. |

For 50 Points
|
|
___ Pick a text or concept you are interested in, and be “teacher for a day”. |
|
___ Convince a published author to come and speak to the class about good writing and the writing process. Author must bring evidence of publication. |
|
___ Write and teach a creative lesson plan teaching some aspect of grammar, literature, reading, or writing. Must be based on the Arizona Content Standards. |

For 100 Points
|
|
___ Tutor an elementary student in reading and writing for at least four weeks. Bring written proof from the school on school letterhead. |
|
___ With at least two other people in the same course, meet in Mr. Tonk’s room at least once per week for at least a half hour for at least six weeks for a student-led study group. Your conversation must center on the content of the course. |
|
___ Pick a story we are studying and re-write it as a play that recounts all major events of the story. Find people to play the roles, rehearse, and present it in the auditorium during lunch. It must be at least fifteen minutes long and memorized. |
